What Do Bed Bugs Look Like? (And Where They Come From So You Can Keep Them Out)

They’re tiny. They’re sneaky. And they are 100% not a sign that your home is dirty. Bed bugs are one of those sleep disruptors that no one wants to talk about until they have to. But here’s the thing: knowing what they look like and where they come from gives you the upper hand. So let’s break it down without the itch inducing panic.

What Do Bed Bugs Actually Look Like?

Not dust. Not lint. Not imagination.

🪳 Adult Bed Bugs
About the size of an apple seed (4 to 7 mm)
Flat and oval shaped when hungry, balloon like after feeding
Reddish brown colour, darker after they’ve had a meal
Six legs, no wings, and a tendency to hide during the day

🐣 Young Bed Bugs (Nymphs)
Tiny, about 1 to 2 mm
Translucent or pale yellow
Hard to spot unless you’re really looking (or they’ve recently fed)

🥚 Bed Bug Eggs
White, pinhead sized, and slightly sticky
Often found in clusters tucked into mattress seams or furniture joints

Yes, it’s unsettling. But knowing what you’re looking for helps you catch them early.

Where Do Bed Bugs Come From?

Spoiler: bed bugs don’t magically appear. They hitchhike their way in.

They cling to:
• Visitors’ bags, jackets, or shoes
• Secondhand furniture (especially mattresses, couches, or bed frames)
• Laundry baskets from shared spaces (like communal laundries or apartment buildings)
• Kids’ backpacks or school gear if exposed elsewhere

They don’t fly or jump, but they crawl fast. Once they find a cozy, dark spot in your home, they’ll settle in.

Where They Like to Hide (Besides Beds)

• Inside mattress seams and piping
• Behind headboards or wall frames
• In the cracks of bed frames or baseboards
• Inside electrical outlets (yep)
• Under loose wallpaper or rugs

Basically, anywhere dark, tight, and close to where you sleep.

How to Know If You’ve Got Them

• Tiny dark spots on your sheets (bed bug poop, gross but true)
• Small reddish smears (from crushed bugs or bites)
• Bites in a line or cluster, especially on arms or legs
• A musty, sweetish smell near your bed (some say it’s like overripe raspberries)

If you’ve noticed one or more of these signs, don’t panic. But do act quickly. Bed bugs multiply fast, so it’s worth bringing in a professional pest control team if you suspect an infestation.

Prevention Tips That Actually Work

• Consider mattresses and toppers made with tightly woven covers or materials like memory foam, latex, hybrid coils, or bamboo blends. These are less welcoming to bed bugs and more welcoming to restful sleep.
• Inspect bedding regularly. Lift sheets, check seams and corners.
• Vacuum your mattress and bed frame regularly.
• Use a protective mattress encasement. (Ours comes with one, FYI.)
• Be cautious with secondhand furniture. Inspect thoroughly or skip it altogether.
• Wash and heat dry bedding weekly. Hot temps help kill off any stowaways.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs (If You Spot Them)

Bed bugs are tough, but not invincible. Here’s what actually works:

• Call a professional pest control service. This is the safest and most effective method for a full infestation.
• Wash bedding and clothes in hot water. Then dry them on the highest heat setting.
• Use a steam cleaner. Bed bugs can’t survive high heat. Steam cracks, seams, and corners.
• Vacuum frequently. Go over your mattress, baseboards, and furniture. Empty the vacuum right after.
• Seal infested items in plastic bags. Leave them in direct sunlight or use heat treatments to kill bugs over time.

Avoid over the counter sprays. They can scatter the bugs and make it harder to eliminate them. When in doubt, bring in the experts.
